Trump praises Pakistan leadership for mediating US-Iran talks
WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has praised Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces Asim Munir for their efforts in facilitating talks between the United States and Iran.
Speaking in a telephonic conversation with Fox News, Trump described both leaders as “great people” and said he had “great respect” for Pakistan’s top leadership.
The US president said he had decided to call off a planned visit by envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, citing travel and logistical constraints, while adding that communication channels remained open.
“If they want to talk, they can come to us, or they can call us,” Trump said, referring to Iran, while emphasising the availability of secure communication lines.
Despite cancelling the trip, Trump reiterated his appreciation for Pakistan’s role, noting that its mediators would continue to remain involved in the negotiation process between Washington and Tehran.

He has repeatedly commended Pakistan’s civil and military leadership for hosting and facilitating the first round of talks in Islamabad earlier this month, describing their role as instrumental in advancing diplomatic engagement.
Pakistan’s efforts to bring both sides to the negotiating table for high-level talks aimed at ending weeks of conflict have drawn international recognition, with Islamabad continuing its diplomatic outreach to support a negotiated settlement.
