RABAT: Two United States service members participating in the multinational African Lion drills have been reported missing near the city of Tan-Tan in Morocco, according to statements issued on Sunday by United States Africa Command and the Moroccan Royal Armed Forces.

The troops went missing near the Cap Draa training site, prompting a large-scale search-and-rescue operation involving ground, air, and maritime units from US, Moroccan, and partner forces.

Moroccan military officials said the incident occurred near a cliff, while a US defence official indicated that initial reports suggest the soldiers may have fallen into the ocean.

“I can confirm this incident is not related to terrorism,” the official said.

The African Lion exercise, the largest annual drill conducted by US Africa Command, is designed to enhance coordination and interoperability between US forces, NATO allies, and African partner nations.

This year’s exercise, running from April 27 to May 8, spans four countries — Ghana, Morocco, Senegal, and Tunisia — with the largest contingent operating in Morocco.

According to Africom, around 5,000 personnel from more than 40 countries are taking part in the drills.

Search efforts are ongoing as authorities continue to assess the situation.
