ISLAMABAD: Ministry of Foreign Affairs Pakistan on Tuesday confirmed that Cambodian authorities have agreed to the early repatriation of 54 Pakistani nationals detained in Siem Reap Province.

Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Andrabi said the individuals were arrested following a raid on a scamming compound, adding that the Pakistan Embassy in Cambodia had actively engaged with local authorities to secure their release.

He said the move was in line with directives from Ishaq Dar to facilitate and support Pakistani nationals abroad.

According to the spokesperson, embassy officials are ensuring the welfare of the detainees, who will return to Pakistan once flight arrangements are finalised.

“As a goodwill gesture, Cambodian authorities have agreed to repatriate them without legal proceedings under the recently enforced law on combating online scams,” Andrabi said, referring to legislation that carries strict penalties including prison terms and heavy fines.

Meanwhile, a Pakistani citizen alleged that local police demanded $1,500 per person for deportation, claiming detainees lacked the funds to comply. He also described harsh conditions in detention, including poor living standards.

The Foreign Office has not commented on these allegations, but reiterated that efforts are ongoing to ensure the safe return of all affected nationals.
