Driver throws passenger coach into Jhelum River after Rs5,000 traffic challan in Muzaffarabad
MUZAFFARABAD: A passenger coach driver, reportedly angered by a Rs5,000 traffic challan for violation of traffic rules, drove his vehicle into the Jhelum River in a shocking incident in Muzaffarabad, police said on Tuesday.
According to police, the incident unfolded after a traffic police officer issued a challan and later boarded the bus, which was being taken for impoundment after dropping off passengers.
During the return journey toward the impound site, the driver suddenly steered the vehicle into the river.
Officials said both the driver and the police officer managed to jump out of the coach before it plunged into the water, saving their lives.
Following the incident, drivers staged a protest at Supreme Court Chowk against the challan and police action, according to officials.

Police said the vehicle had been stopped over traffic violations, and the driver was being escorted to an impound facility when the incident occurred.
The episode comes shortly after the Punjab government revised traffic fines for different categories of vehicles, including motorcycles, cars and commercial transport.
Under the updated rules, fines range from Rs1,000 for minor violations such as lane discipline issues or mobile phone use on motorcycles, to Rs5,000 for serious violations involving commercial vehicles, including driving without a license or breaking traffic signals.
Authorities have not yet confirmed whether any disciplinary or criminal proceedings will be initiated following the incident, while an investigation is underway.
