Karachi: The Karachi Traffic Police have announced that an e-challan system for lane discipline violations on Sharea Faisal will be implemented from June 1.

According to a spokesperson for the traffic police, motorists violating lane rules on the city’s main artery will be issued electronic challans through a camera-based monitoring system.

Citizens have been urged to strictly follow lane discipline while driving. The spokesperson said all vehicles, including motorcycles, buses and cars, must remain in their designated lanes to avoid penalties.

The announcement follows remarks by Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Traffic Peer Muhammad Shah, who told Geo News that a new traffic management plan is being introduced to enforce structured lane discipline using the city’s existing surveillance network.

He said the initial phase of the system will focus on Sharea Faisal, where monitoring infrastructure is already in place.

Under the plan, motorcycles, rickshaws, buses and other light transport vehicles, including mazda vans, will be required to use the two leftmost lanes, while the remaining lanes will be reserved for faster traffic, including cars and double-cabin vehicles.

Officials said the enforcement will be backed by an automated camera system that will directly issue e-challans to violators.

Fines have also been fixed according to vehicle categories, with motorcycles and rickshaws facing penalties of Rs2,500, while buses will be fined Rs7,500 for lane violations.
