National Assembly Approves Over Rs40 Trillion in Budget Grants for FY2026-27

Defence receives the largest allocation as lawmakers clear funding demands for 29 ministries and divisions during budget proceedings.

ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly on Sunday approved demands for grants exceeding Rs40.48 trillion for various ministries and divisions as part of the federal budget for the fiscal year 2026-27, marking a significant step in the budget approval process.

The session, presided over by Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, approved 89 demands for grants covering 29 ministries and divisions through a majority vote. The allocations were endorsed ministry by ministry in accordance with parliamentary budget procedures.

The largest share of approved funding went to the Defence Division, which secured more than Rs30.67 trillion through five separate demands for grants, making it the highest-funded sector during the session.

The Communications Division received over Rs1.25 trillion under five demands, while the Ministry of Federal Education and Professional Training was allocated more than Rs1.21 trillion through nine approved demands. The Water Resources Division secured over Rs1.07 trillion, while Pakistan Railways received more than Rs1.11 trillion through two demands.

Significant allocations were also approved for the Power and Maritime Affairs divisions, which collectively received Rs4.12 trillion. The Planning Division was allocated Rs37.21 billion, while the Interior Division and its attached departments secured Rs45.04 billion.

Other notable allocations included Rs68.17 billion for the Foreign Affairs Division, Rs27.99 billion for the Commerce Division, and Rs42.07 billion for the Information Technology Division. The Law and Justice Division received Rs24.91 billion, while the National Health Services Division was allocated Rs53.28 billion.

The Cabinet Division and its attached departments secured Rs58.34 billion, while the Defence Production Division received Rs2.11 billion. The Privatisation Division was allocated Rs1.74 billion.

The House also approved funding for several key institutions and departments, including the Senate Secretariat, National Assembly Secretariat, Parliamentary Affairs Division, Economic Affairs Division, Housing and Works Division, Human Rights Division, Science and Technology Division, Religious Affairs Division, and the Inter-Provincial Coordination Division.

Earlier in the proceedings, lawmakers approved more than Rs27.57 billion for the Information and Broadcasting Division, while expenditures for the Interior Ministry and its affiliated departments also received parliamentary endorsement.

Funding allocations for the Finance Division, Climate Change Division, Maritime Affairs Division, and the Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan Affairs Division were likewise approved during the session.

Addressing the House, Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq stated that the budget process was continuing according to parliamentary rules and procedures, with grant approvals being finalized in stages as debate on the federal budget progressed.

The approval of demands for grants represents a crucial phase in the passage of the federal budget, which will eventually culminate in the formal adoption of Pakistan’s budget for the 2026-27 fiscal year.
