PM Shehbaz directs banks to expand financing for Apna Ghar Scheme

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday directed government and private banks to enhance financing for the Prime Minister Apna Ghar Scheme, reaffirming that providing affordable housing to the common man remains one of the government’s highest priorities.

Chairing a review meeting on the progress of the housing initiative, the prime minister instructed authorities to accelerate implementation of the scheme and ensure greater support from financial institutions to maximise its reach and effectiveness.

PM Shehbaz said the initiative was launched to enable low- and middle-income families to realise their dream of owning a home, adding that affordable housing is essential for improving the quality of life of ordinary citizens.

He also directed the relevant authorities to devise a comprehensive strategy for developing both vertical and horizontal model housing projects under the scheme to meet growing housing demand.

The meeting was informed that banks have so far approved financing worth Rs204 billion under the Prime Minister Apna Ghar Scheme, while loans amounting to Rs27 billion have already been disbursed to beneficiaries.

Officials said the Ministry of Housing and the State Bank of Pakistan are conducting weekly reviews to monitor the scheme’s progress and ensure timely implementation.

The meeting was attended by Economic Affairs Minister Ahad Khan Cheema, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, Housing and Works Minister Mian Riaz Hussain Pirzada, Minister of State for Finance and Railways Bilal Azhar Kayani, and senior government officials.
