PMD forecasts dust storms, thunderstorms and hail across Pakistan from June 2 to 5

Westerly wave expected to trigger widespread rain, wind and potential landslides in northern regions

Islamabad: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) on Monday forecast dust-thunderstorms across large parts of the country from June 2 to 5 under the influence of a westerly wave expected to enter the upper regions on June 2.

According to the PMD, scattered dust-thunderstorm rain, along with isolated heavy falls and hailstorms, is likely in Islamabad and several districts of Punjab, including Rawalpindi, Lahore, Faisalabad, Multan, Sialkot, Gujranwala, and surrounding areas during the forecast period with occasional gaps.

In Azad Jammu and Kashmir, rain, wind and thunderstorms with isolated heavy falls and hail are expected in areas including Muzaffarabad, Rawalakot, Neelum Valley, Poonch, Kotli and Mirpur from June 2 to 5.

For Gilgit-Baltistan, rain-wind and thunderstorms are expected between June 4 and 6 in districts including Gilgit, Skardu, Hunza, Astore and Diamer.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, scattered thunderstorms with heavy rain and hail are likely in multiple districts including Peshawar, Swat, Malakand, Abbottabad, Kohat, Bannu and Dera Ismail Khan from June 2 to 5.

Dust-thunderstorm conditions are also expected in northeastern Balochistan, including Quetta, Zhob, Ziarat and Chaman from June 2 to 4, while upper Sindh areas such as Sukkur, Larkana, Jacobabad and Khairpur are also likely to experience similar weather.

The PMD warned that strong winds, hailstorms and lightning may damage weak structures, including solar panels, electric poles and billboards during the forecast period.

It also cautioned that landslides may occur in vulnerable mountainous regions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir from June 3 to 6.

Farmers have been advised to take precautionary measures to protect crops, while tourists and travellers have been urged to avoid unnecessary movement in affected areas.

Authorities have been advised to remain alert and take necessary steps to prevent any untoward incidents during the expected weather activity.
