SHIKARPUR: A station house officer was shot dead in an alleged case of mistaken identity after a policeman opened fire on his vehicle in Sindh’s Shikarpur on Tuesday, police said.

Senior Superintendent of Police Muhammad Kaleem identified the deceased as SHO Ali Hassan, who was posted at Lakhi Ghulam Shah police station.

According to the SSP, the incident occurred near the Golo Daro area at around 5am when the officer was driving his newly purchased private car.

Police officials stationed in the area reportedly opened fire on the vehicle after considering it suspicious, resulting in the SHO’s death.

SSP Kaleem confirmed that the policeman involved in the firing has been taken into custody and placed under quarter guard, while an investigation into the incident is underway.

Sindh Inspector General Javed Alam Odho took notice of the incident and sought a report from Larkana DIG Nasir Aftab.

The incident comes months after Sindh Home Minister Zia-ul-Hassan Lanjar announced a large-scale operation against dacoits in the province’s riverine (Katcha) areas, vowing strict action against criminal elements.
