BOSTON: Scotland ended a 36-year wait for a World Cup victory on Saturday as they edged Haiti 1-0 in a tightly contested Group C match, with John McGinn scoring the decisive goal in the first half.

Backed by their travelling supporters, known as the Tartan Army, Scotland started brightly and created early pressure. Their breakthrough came in the 28th minute when Che Adams’ close-range effort was saved by Haiti goalkeeper Johny Placide, but McGinn reacted quickest to fire home after the rebound deflected into his path.

Earlier, Scott McTominay came close to opening the scoring when his powerful strike hit the post in the 17th minute, setting the tone for Scotland’s attacking intent.

Haiti, appearing at the World Cup for the first time since 1974, showed flashes of pace and energy, especially in the closing stages, but struggled to convert their chances. Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn remained largely untested as the Haitian attack failed to break through.

In the 38th minute, Ruben Providence missed a golden opportunity from close range after being dispossessed by Aaron Hickey, while Frantzdy Pierrot later headed narrowly wide in the 85th minute. Haiti pushed again in the final moments but could not find an equaliser.

The result puts Steve Clarke’s side top of Group C ahead of Brazil and Morocco, who had drawn their earlier fixture 1-1.

Scotland’s previous World Cup win came back in 1990, and this victory gives them a strong platform in the expanded tournament format where goal difference could prove crucial for qualification to the knockout stage.

Scotland now face Morocco in Boston on Friday, while Haiti take on Brazil in Philadelphia.
